U.S. markets stumble under pressure from new Trump tariffs

    April 9, 2025

Financial markets experienced heightened turbulence on Wednesday as the latest round of tariffs from U.S. President Donald Trump officially took effect. The move, which has triggered swift retaliation from China and drawn criticism from business leaders, pushed U.S. stocks to the brink of a bear market and drove a sharp rise in government borrowing costs. Shortly after the tariffs were implemented at midnight, yields on U.S. Treasury bonds spiked, signaling rising investor anxiety.

U.S. markets stumble under pressure from new Trump tariffs

This development undermined a key rationale behind the White House’s strategy, which has framed tariffs as a tool to rebalance trade without destabilizing domestic financial conditions. Trading on Wall Street reflected the mounting uncertainty. Major indexes such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 experienced significant swings, although they moved briefly into positive territory late Wednesday morning. However, analysts cautioned that these gains were likely driven by reduced trading volumes, with many investors sidelining activity amid the volatility.

Compounding the market turmoil, China announced it would raise retaliatory tariffs on U.S. imports from 34% to 84%, and ban 12 American firms from entering its market. The European Union is also preparing its own set of countermeasures, following the imposition of 25% tariffs on European goods by the U.S. Concerns of deeper economic fallout are mounting. In an interview with a media outlet, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon warned that a U.S. recession was becoming more likely due to the escalating trade conflict. “When you see a 2,000-point decline in the Dow, it sort of feeds on itself,” Dimon said.

Some experts have suggested that the Federal Reserve may need to step in to calm bond markets. Deutsche Bank global head of FX strategy George Saravelos wrote that continued instability in the U.S. Treasury market could necessitate emergency Fed intervention via large-scale asset purchases. Former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers described the unusual combination of surging bond yields and falling equity prices as a signal that international investors are losing confidence in U.S. assets. “We are being treated by global financial markets like a problematic emerging market,” Summers posted on X. Despite the market reaction, the White House has signaled no retreat.

Trump announced plans for additional tariffs targeting pharmaceutical products, a move that triggered pre-market losses in major biopharmaceutical stocks. In a post on Truth Social, Trump urged American companies to relocate operations domestically, promising regulatory leniency and infrastructure support. Meanwhile, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent dismissed concerns over rising yields and downplayed the effectiveness of China’s retaliation.

“They’re the surplus country,” he said. “So they can raise their tariffs, but so what?” Major U.S. corporations are already reacting to the uncertainty. Walmart and Delta Air Lines have withdrawn their financial forecasts, citing the unpredictable impact of tariffs. Walmart emphasized the pressure on its pricing strategy, while Delta criticized the administration’s trade approach as misguided. – By MENA Newswire News Desk.
